Sackville..Engineering the future

From September 2004, Sackville has been designated as Specialist Engineering school. The additional funding that this brings in will allow us to:

  • Refurbish one of the science laboratories
  • Install interactive electronic whiteboards in all Maths classrooms and Science Laboratories
  • Create a state of the art computer aided design and manufacturing suite in the technology department, (known as CAD and CAM).

All students will benefit form these projects. There will be a clear focus on raising achievement in science , maths and design and technology. This will involve a range of innovative projects, all of which aim to keep students of all abilities on track to realise their full potential.

In addition we will be developing a range of projects with a variety of industrial partners that raise awareness of the range career opportunities available within the field of engineering. These will allow students to have "hands on " experience of the world of engineering. They will also have opportunities to undertake work experience placements with local companies.

We will also be developing a range of projects that allow the wider community to benefit form our facilities. Our feeder primary schools will be able to use the Cad Cam equipment to design and make mini projects. We plan to share our expertise with the primary schools in the field of science. We will encourage the involvement of other community groups who would benefit form the use of these facilities.

Over the coming months, as one of the first Engineering Colleges in the South East, Sackville will:

  • develop higher standards of attainment and progress amongst all students in all subjects.
  • become a focus for the engineering world, promoting the profession with all our students and the wider community.
  • disseminate good practice and participate in engineering focused curriculum projects with our partner schools; through National organisations such as Young Engineers and through our established network of schools around the world.
Sackville's students will:
  • see how the world of engineering is central to our present day lives.
  • experience the impact of engineering throughout their entire curriculum.
  • have many opportunities to experience the world of engineering in their lessons; through work experience programmes and through direct contact with engineers.
  • be made aware of the range of career opportunities and pathways into all branches of engineering.
  • be aware of the range of qualifications available at all levels within the National Qualification Framework.
  • follow a curriculum offering a diverse range of opportunities to pursue both academic and vocational qualifications
  • work with modern design software and various CAM processes.
  • receive high quality education in Mathematics, Science and Technology in modern specialised rooms making full use of contemporary technologies.
Sackville's staff will:
  • promote engineering as central to the success of modern society.
  • deliver high quality education to all students in ways suited to individual needs.
  • participate in a variety of professional development activities aimed at promoting learning, developing experience of all aspects of engineering in the work place and developing practitioners and leaders of the highest quality within in the field of education.
Sackville's community partners will:
  • share in Sackville's expertise within Mathematics, Science and Technology through further collaborative projects.
  • take part in a range of activities using Sackville's specialised facilities.
  • benefit from access to and the loan of our resources.
  • come to appreciate the central role of engineering in modern society.

Through engineering college status, Sackville will not only make a significant contribution to engineering and the economy, but will also develop the highest quality education for all our students.
