A wide variety of support is provided by the Special Needs Department to enable SEN students at Sackville to achieve their entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. The programmes of study and schemes of work within the school take account of a wide range of pupil abilities. The department is organised with regard to the SEN Code of Practice 2001 and our process of identification and assessment plays a crucial part in providing appropriate provision. Subject to teaching resources the Special Needs Department aims to support students who are experiencing difficulties in the following areas: communication and interaction; cognition and learning; behavioural, emotional and social development; sensory and/or physical. Sackville's SEN Department consists of a purpose made suite of rooms comprising two well resourced flexible teaching rooms and office. Rooms have computers and are internet linked. Students are timetabled for group and individual teaching sessions but help and advice are available throughout the day as necessary. In the summer term prior to secondary transfer a visit is made to all feeder schools. Sackville subject teachers are briefed with details of student need through the SEN register and individual profiles written in consultation with the students themselves. On entry to Sackville students have their skills assessed and a graduated approach of action and provision is implemented. All students at School Action, School Action Plus or holding Statements of Educational Need will have an Individual Education Plan which are reviewed twice a year. Parents are invited to keep the department informed of any important changes in circumstances relevant to the student's work |
